Auto Inspired Design

What would you do if someone challenged you to take your design inspiration from a car? Designers take inspiration from everywhere – nature, color, words, architecture – why not cars?

For the past 6 years, General Motors has sponsored a design competition with students at the International Academy of Design & Technology in Chicago (the Academy), challenging them to take inspiration from top automobiles. Academy students examined GM cars at the Chicago Auto Show in February - 2008, checking out the grills, headlights, interiors, and the color of cars. They looked at the topstitching, gear shift, the control panels, and the texture of each automobile's upholstery until they found that “special something” that inspired them to create a garment that was unique to the car.

For me, there has been nothing more inspirational than to watch these students at work.
